What is your Personal Brand?
Your personal brand, simply put it is your reputation. Its what people think of you. Its the feeling, the emotion and the imagery that comes to mind when you think of someone. Its how you engage with another person and the experience you leave them with. Personal Branding is a very popular word today. But what is it that makes up a personal brand. We all have a brand whether you know it or not, the question is are you actively cultivating it? Here are 4 steps you can take to begin cultivating a strong personal brand.
Describe your Brand : Identify who and what you are? Be clear about your brand. Write down what you want your brand to say about you. Jot down a clear statement which can be descriptive but also is not rambling. It has to resonate with you. Here are some pointers to keep in mind while you write that brand statement.
- What are your passions and how do you want your brand to reflect that?
- How do you want your brand to come across on social media and in person?
- When people think of you what do you want them to associate you with?
- Is it a subject matter in which you want to be perceived as an expert or are there any general qualities that you want associated with your brand?
Stay Authentic : Now that you have written down what you want your personal brand to look like, Ask yourself if it is authentic to you?
- Is your brand statement aligned to your personal values?
- Are you trying too hard to be something you aren’t?
Remember you cant be 2 different personas, it simply doesn’t work and can actually be extremely damaging to your brand as people will see through hypocrisy or anything that isn’t based on reality. If your arent authentic, it leads to distrust.
Ask for Feedback : Understand what your personal brand is now. Choose a few colleagues, peers and seniors, people you trust with their opinion and ask them specific questions about what they think of you. Ask them to describe you in 3 or 4 words. What do they think you are good at and what you need to improve? Ask for examples if you don’t think what they are saying is you. Find out what your blind spots are? Everyone has them.
Audit Yourself : Audit yourself online. Conduct a simple google search. See what your Facebook timeline, Instagram and Twitter feed look like. Is your Online personality the real you? Is that like you in person as well?
